Everyone's jumping on the AI doll trend - but what are the concerns?

Learn AI in 5 minutes a day

This is the easiest way for a busy person wanting to learn AI in as little time as possible:

  1. Sign up for The Rundown AI newsletter

  2. They send you 5-minute email updates on the latest AI news and how to use it

  3. You learn how to become 2x more productive by leveraging AI

🧸 What Is the AI Doll Trend?

At its core, the trend is simple:

  1. Upload a photo of yourself to an AI image generator like ChatGPT.

  2. Add prompts describing how you want to look – your clothing, accessories, background, and packaging style.

  3. Let the AI work its magic, and boom – you're turned into a pocket-sized plastic persona.

Some people go all in: adding job titles, brand logos, accessories like cameras, microphones, or even toy pets. The AI then renders a boxed “action figure” version of them – often styled like a Barbie or superhero.

From casual Instagram users to major brands like Mario Badescu and Royal Mail, everyone’s getting in on it.

📈 Why Is It Blowing Up?

There’s a reason this is everywhere.

As social media analyst Jasmine Enberg explains, generative AI tools make trend participation easier and faster than ever before. Instead of waiting for a designer or artist to bring your idea to life, AI delivers near-instant gratification.

This accessibility lowers the barrier to entry – and in a world driven by FOMO, people don't want to be left behind.

😄 It’s Fun… Until It’s Not

What starts off as innocent fun can quickly run into problems. Here's where things get complicated:

❌ AI Gets It Wrong (A Lot)

  • Many users report that their AI dolls look nothing like them.

  • Features like skin tone, hair color, and even eye color are often rendered inaccurately – raising concerns around bias in AI training data.

  • BBC technology editor Zoe Kleinman tested the trend herself and shared her experience: while trying to recreate her likeness, the AI:

    • Made her eyes blue (instead of green-hazel).

    • Made her look too old, then too young.

    • Struggled to respect brand mentions like "BBC News."

After multiple tweaks and prompts, she still couldn’t get an accurate representation.

🔋 Hidden Costs: The Environmental Impact

AI image generation is computationally intensive. It may seem harmless, but the data centers powering tools like ChatGPT consume vast amounts of electricity.

“Every time we create one of these AI memes, it kills a tree,”
Lance Ulanoff, US editor at TechRadar (humorously – but with a point)

Professor Gina Neff of Queen Mary University London adds:

“These systems are burning through energy. Some AI data centers consume more power than entire countries.”

Many generative AI models are trained on enormous datasets scraped from the internet – including copyrighted materials.
This means that while you're customizing your AI doll, the system might be referencing intellectual property it never had permission to use.

“ChatGPT Barbie represents a triple threat – to privacy, culture, and the planet,” says Prof. Neff.

🎭 So… Should You Try It?

Here’s the catch: just because a trend is fun doesn’t mean it’s harmless.

Yes, it’s engaging. Yes, it’s creative. But it’s also:

  • Environmentally costly

  • Ethically murky

  • Prone to inaccuracies and bias

Jo Bromilow, Director of Social and Influencer at MSL UK, asks the central question:

“Is a cute, funny result really worth it?”

🧭 Final Thoughts

AI isn’t going away. If anything, it’s becoming more deeply embedded in how we create, connect, and communicate. But as we adopt these technologies, the how matters just as much as the what.

Before jumping into the next AI-powered trend, here are a few questions to consider:

  • Who created this tool, and what data was it trained on?

  • What’s the environmental impact of generating this content?

  • Are we using AI as a tool – or just another toy?

Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is pause before you post.
